Embedded Firmware Engineer

Position Description

 
The incumbent is one of the Company’s primary resources to provide technical expertise in the design of embedded systems for communication systems. The engineer is responsible for the development, and qualification of firmware to bring products to specification.​ This position supports the design, manufacture of new products and test of existing designs; Analyzes designs to characterize performance and provide data, revises designs to achieve product performance and product goals, evaluates and chooses new devices to be used in existing products.​ It is also responsible for evaluating test equipment and software assets documenting design and test procedures.

​Candidates must be experienced working with multiple processor families such as Intel, Microchip, Coldfire and Analog Devices. Along with ability to work with C & C++ programming, embedded operating systems and register level assembler. Experience with SPI, I2C, Ethernet and other common communications protocols needed. A background including FPGA design and DSP programming is a definite plus.
 
Candidate is expected to have the following skills:
  1. Ability to design and develop firmware for 8, 16 and 32 bit microcontrollers using C, C++, and assembly languages.
  2. Read and interpret schematics
  3. Use oscilloscope, logic analyzers and other tools, methods and processes related to embedded development, test and troubleshooting.
  4. Possess a working knowledge of CPLD, SPLD and FPGA devices.
  5. Experience with embedded programming for Freescale, ADI and Microchip devices: 
The incumbent works as part of the engineering group to support the product definition, proposal generation, baselines and validation of the product. The position will work closely with the Engineering group for all activities. The incumbent will work alone or in a group as required. The incumbent may direct and supervise project personnel including subordinate engineers and engineering technicians.
 
The incumbent applies their skills to meet Company and customer needs and expectations. Assumes directed responsibility for all technical specifications, technical content, and project design.  Customarily works with minimal supervision & direction. The applicant must have a strong interest in radio communications and RF technology.

Required Experience

  • Must have a deep understanding of embedded programming (required).
  • Experience with C, C++, ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE, Code Warrior IDE, and Analog Devices DSP.
  • FPGA, Coldfire Microcontrollers
  • Should have experience with communications equipment.
  • Must have experience with design to meet certification of various agencies as well as applicable military standards.
  • At least 10 years industry and / or military experience outside of school. 
 
Educational Requirements
  • High School graduate or equivalent (required).
  • Bachelors’ degree in Software Engineering / Electrical Engineering or Computer Science

  • Excellent interpersonal skills in a team environment.
  • Must not have any medical limitations preventing the use & exposure to typical chemicals utilized in product manufacturing activity.  Examples include, solder, flux, cleaning solutions, and paint.
